Economists and job market experts are of the opinion that the recent/continuing rise in the number of Covid-19 infections in the country and fears of a possible fourth wave is not likely to deter companies strengthening their teams in the near-term amid pickup in business activity, rise in consumption, and reopening of offices, educational institutions and business establishments, with the uprise in Online Learning/Micro Learning/ Mobile Learning/Upskilling platforms.

India’s blue collar job market showed a robust, sturdy and vigorous growth of 73% in vacancies in Jan-Mar of last fiscal (FY22) compared to the previous quarter, according to data from Qjobs, a part of Quess Corp. There were more than 2 million blue and grey collar job vacancies registered on the Qjobs platform in the fourth quarter (of 2021) reflecting an improved market sentiment, driven by increased consumer buying and revival of business activities that led to an increase in demand for manpower across various sectors in major industries.

Retail and banking and financial services (BFSI) sectors witnessed a sharp rebound in business across India. Data showcases most Tier-II and Tier-III cities recording a continuous recovery in hiring across sectors/industries. Top sectors included BPO/customer care, delivery, data entry/back office, field sales, and retail/counter sales categories (Ref: Economic Times).

Grey collar refers to workers not classified as white or blue collar and have specialized technical skills.

The macro indicators such as rising interest rates, runaway inflation, supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine are flashing red and companies are keeping a close watch on these aspects, the micro dynamics aspects are enforcing every sector to deal with sudden fluctuations in demand, rising attrition and potential opportunity cost of lost business. Hence, consumption spikes have been seen across segments due to revenge consumption or FOMO (fear of missing out), especially at the higher segment in categories ranging from white goods, automobiles, and housing, and a few more segments. Hence, positive near-term indicators such as increased mobility, relatively strong corporate balance sheets and higher medium-term growth trajectory are forcing companies to have adequate manpower despite the sword of the fourth wave hanging.
